What is the best way to view wildlife aboard the ship?

Enhancing your wildlife experience with the right equipment

Quality binoculars significantly enhance your wildlife viewing experience while on board. Binoculars are rated with two numbers: the first is magnification, and the second is the objective lens diameter in millimeters. The first number indicates how much the image is magnified, while the second measures how much light the binoculars gather. Higher second numbers improve image brightness but also add weight.

For a good balance of magnification, weight, and clarity, divide the second number by the first—an ideal result is around 5. Excellent choices include 7x35, 8x42, or 10x42 binoculars.

To use binoculars effectively, first locate your subject with your naked eye. Then, without looking away, raise the binoculars to your eyes. If you lose sight of the subject, lower the binoculars and try again. With practice, you’ll be able to quickly spot wildlife using this technique.
