What currency should I bring?
Understanding currency use on board and in the regions we visit
U.S. dollars (USD) are used for your Shipboard Account, while Canadian dollars (CAD) are accepted in the gift shop, for equipment rentals, and for paid excursions. In the communities we visit, local currencies apply—for example, CAD in Canada, DKK in Greenland and the Faroes, GBP in Scotland, EUR in Saint-Pierre, and ISK in Iceland.
In Greenland:
Danish Kroner (DKK) is the local currency. It is not strictly necessary to bring DKK, as most shops accept credit cards and ATMs are available in communities like Ilulissat, Nuuk, and Kangerlussuaq. Some vendors may also accept USD or Euros. However, small-scale artisans and street vendors may only accept cash. If you wish to purchase small souvenirs or local crafts, we recommend carrying a small amount of DKK. Note that you may not be able to exchange Kroner once you return home, and no currency exchange is offered on board.
In Canada (Nunavut and Labrador):
Cash in Canadian dollars is recommended, especially for purchases from local artists or in small communities where credit cards are often not accepted and ATMs are limited. Foreign currency is not accepted in these regions. The amount you bring depends on your interests; for example, fine art pieces can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
General Tip:
Credit card access may be limited in remote areas, so carrying a small amount of local currency for each region is recommended.
