# Understanding Zodiac excursions
## What to know about these small but mighty expedition vessels
*This Article Applies to all Adventure Canada Small-Ship Expeditions*
Zodiac excursions are an exciting part of every expedition, offering close-up views of coastlines, wildlife, and landings. Guests are divided into groups that rotate daily so everyone has the chance to be among the first to disembark. This system helps reduce bottlenecks and long waits in stairwells. Our skilled Zodiac drivers work efficiently and do their best to keep everyone as dry as possible, though conditions like wind and swell can sometimes make for a splashy ride.
Zodiacs may be used for short five-minute transfers to shore or for scenic cruises lasting considerably longer. The decks can be wet with saltwater, so waterproof bags are recommended to protect cameras and valuables. Warm, layered clothing will help you stay comfortable in the often chilly conditions. Life jackets are provided and must be worn at all times—they cannot be obstructed by a backpack, strap, or any other item. As always, follow your driver’s instructions for a safe and enjoyable outing.
